About Owen
I hold a first-class degree in French from the University of Oxford, and I am currently based in Hackney.
I offer tuition in a number of areas, including:
- French language, from complete beginners to advanced learners;
- French literature and film, including preparation for A Level and university (or learning for pleasure!);
- Oxbridge admissions and interview preparation;
- Essay writing and written expression, in both English and French.
I tailor my sessions to each student's level, needs, and goals. Whether you are starting from scratch, looking to build confidence in grammar, or wanting to take your learning further through literature and film, I aim to make my sessions rigorous and engaging in equal measure.
For students interested in literature and film, I have a reading/viewing list of French texts and films for you to choose from, ranging from 19th-century novelists such as Flaubert and Sand to contemporary authors like Annie Ernaux and Édouard Louis. We can use these as a starting point for discussion, close reading, and improving your French. Students looking to apply to Oxford or Cambridge for languages will find this particularly useful, as exploring French-language culture beyond the expectations of the curriculum can help you to develop your own interests and give you ideas to discuss in your personal statement and interview.

My lessons typically last one hour and are tailored to what you hope to get out of them. Depending on your goals, we might go over some grammar, discuss a French text or film, practise exam strategies, or develop an essay together. I also like to leave room for what *you* would like to do or find interesting: simply let me know in advance, and we can work something out. The possibilities are (almost) endless!
