About Michael

Hello, I'm Michael! I've just graduated from the University of Oxford with a Degree in Modern Languages (French and Spanish) achieving a strong 2.1.

My interests in Spanish literature have focused around Golden-Age literature (15th-17th C.) and Latin-American writers like Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. For French, I developed a particular fascination for Francophone writers across the Caribbean and North Africa such as Assia Djebar, Maryse Condé and Patrick Chamoiseau.

As for my academic background, I had a range of interests across sciences and humanities at school but I ended up gravitating towards languages choosing French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, Ancient Greek and History as my GCSE options, achieving 12 A* overall. At this stage, I was not sure what studying languages at university would resemble (ironically nor was I particularly enthused by the idea) but I remember being fascinated with what it would feel like to be fluent in another language. I ended up choosing Maths, Spanish and French at A-Level, and Pre-U History, achieving A*, A*, A and D3 respectively. I also achieved an outstanding achievement award for an independent research project on the French Revolution.

Outside of my studies, I am a lover of sport and I'm often found playing football or training for 400M.

About the lesson

I focus on language teaching for GCSE, A-Level or applications to top UK universities.

My belief is that language learning can only be achieved through a holistic approach. Alongside, careful preparation for qualifications, I would supplement this teaching by recommending the use of newspapers, podcasts, films, books etc. based on the students' own interests.

I believe that languages should be taught as much in the target language as possible to replicate full immersion. I have even developed my own creative translation workshops from scratch to promote language learning in primary schools, as part of the Queen's College Translation Exchange.

During my time at Oxford I was involved in a lot of mentoring and access programmes. As a mentor for Target Oxbridge, I provide one-to-one support to talented black students to maximise their potential, assisting students in making successful applications for French and Spanish to the University of Oxford. As an Access and Outreach Ambassador for the University of Oxford I worked several times as a French ambassador on the summer school programme UNIQ to help state school students make competitive applications to Oxford.

Language learning is unfortunately on the decline in the UK, but I am motivated to inspire my students to cultivate their own love for languages.
