About Maria
Hi! I'm Maria, and I really love mathematics. I know that maths can sometimes feel intimidating, especially when you are faced with a topic that seems to make no sense or a problem where you have no idea where to begin. I really enjoy helping students get past that feeling and reach the point where things start to click.
I try to create a relaxed environment where there are no such things as “stupid” questions and where it is completely okay to make mistakes. I want students to feel comfortable thinking out loud, trying different approaches, and taking the time they need to understand something properly. I especially enjoy finding different ways of explaining an idea until we find the one that makes sense to you.
I have three years of experience as a university Teaching Assistant at Columbia University, and I recently completed an MSc in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Oxford. Outside of teaching, I work in mathematical research and quantitative modelling, so I get to spend a lot of my time doing what I enjoy most: solving interesting problems!

I offer personalised maths lessons for students from secondary school through university level, as well as SAT preparation and support with US university applications. I believe mathematics is much easier to learn when you understand where things come from rather than simply memorising formulae. I focus on deriving results and building ideas from first principles, and I love using diagrams and visual representations whenever possible to make abstract concepts intuitive. I have over 10 years of experience teaching and working with students, including 3 years as a university Teaching Assistant at Columbia University, where I taught proof-based calculus, linear algebra, and modern algebra. I recently completed an MSc in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Oxford with Distinction and received the Departmental Award for Best Dissertation. I also have extensive experience with the SAT/ACT and the US university admissions process. Lessons are typically 60 minutes and can focus on exam preparation, challenging topics, problem-solving, or developing a deeper mathematical understanding.
