About Fiona
I am an experienced teacher with over 10 years’ background in philosophy. I started out with PPE at Oxford, before moving on to UCL’s MPhil and PhD. I’ve been teaching undergraduates at UCL for the past five years, on a wide range of subjects, including philosophy of mind, moral philosophy, and specific thinkers in the history of philosophy (including Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, Kant, Wittgenstein, Sartre and De Beauvoir). My own research cuts across philosophy of mind, moral philosophy, and philosophy of language. Together with my wide range of teaching experience and other topics that I have covered as a graduate philosopher at UCL, I have expertise across all core areas of philosophy (including metaphysics), and I am equipped to teach all areas.

In my five years’ of teaching at UCL I have found that students learn best through a combination of challenge and encouragement. I work to build students’ confidence, as they learn to reason critically, come up with their own ideas, and present them effectively in spoken and written form. In their feedback, students have praised my ability to clarify complex material, whilst offering interesting and engaging lessons.
As a tutor, I offer a flexible approach to teaching and learning, based on specific students’ needs. We can agree together which topics to discuss, and consider key concepts and ideas, as well as homing in on the details of specific philosophers’ views and arguments. It will likely be most helpful to discuss some independent written work and how to develop it, as well as considering past exam papers where appropriate.
