About Spencer

I first encountered A Level Maths during a gap year, when I taught myself the course on a condensed timetable. I know what it is like to return to maths after time away, or to work through a large amount of content quickly under pressure. I went on to achieve an A* in A Level Maths, alongside A*s in Economics, History and Politics.

I then studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Oxford, where I had the time of my life! I achieved a First in Quantitative Economics and particularly enjoyed the mathematical and statistical side of the degree. I love pure maths and statistics, and I find guiding students towards that “a-ha!” moment — when something suddenly clicks — to be one of the most satisfying parts of tutoring. I hope we will have many of those moments together.

I have also worked with many successful applicants to Oxford and Cambridge for economics-related courses, including mature students and reapplicants. These include:
Oxford PPE: 5 offers
Oxford Economics and Management: 2 offers
Cambridge Economics: 6 offers

One student I am particularly proud to have worked with was a mature applicant who received an Oxford PPE offer in January, conditional on achieving an A in A Level Maths that June — despite not yet having started the course. We worked through the syllabus together week by week, beginning with the fundamentals and building upwards. He achieved the grade and is now studying PPE at Oxford.

Although I eventually made it to Oxford, I also know what it is like to struggle at school. I did not really connect with education until Sixth Form and needed additional support with my dyslexia. I also had to reapply to Oxford after narrowly missing out on a place on my first attempt.

Because of that, I understand that academic progress is rarely straightforward. Whether you are aiming for an A*, trying to move up a grade, returning to Maths after time away, or simply finding the subject difficult at the moment, I hope I can meet you wherever you are in your academic journey and help you move forward with confidence.

I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate and am a member of The Tutors' Association.

Our tutorials will be planned around your individual needs, building from whatever level you are currently working at and moving at a pace that suits you.

Once you have told me what you are finding difficult, we will work out where the problem really lies and build up your understanding from there. I often find that students get stuck because an earlier part of the topic was never fully understood, so where necessary we will go back and rebuild those foundations properly.

Rather than relying on memorisation, I will help you understand where methods come from and why they work. We will build up difficult ideas from first principles, using diagrams, graphs and visual tools wherever possible so that each step makes sense.

For A Level Maths, I teach all of Pure Maths alongside Probability and Statistics. For Mechanics, I work closely with my friend and fellow Oxford graduate Hamza, who specialises in that part of the course. We will keep a shared record of your progress and regularly discuss where you are doing well and where you may need more support. If you choose to work with us, you will have two Oxford economics graduates working together to identify and fix any weaknesses across the whole A Level.

At the end of each lesson, you will receive a lesson pack containing the work we completed together, giving you a useful resource to revisit afterwards and use in your revision.
