About Bruce
I've tutored math since 2018 and use statistics and data analysis daily as a research scientist, so I teach math the way I actually use it.
I have a BSc Genetics (UCC) and MSc Clinical Embryology (Oxford). Eight years tutoring math, chemistry and biology. My work involves statistical analysis and large data sets, including responsibility for the loading parameter data sets on a benchtop sequencer at Oxford Nanopore. Also I achieved a H1 in my own Leaving cert Math exam.

The 25 bonus points for Higher Level Math are the best value in the Leaving Cert, and you only need a H6 to get them. Students drop to Ordinary when they're closer to that than they think, so the first thing I do with anyone considering it is work out honestly whether staying at Higher is realistic. Sometimes it isn't and I'll say so.
Most students can do the mechanics and freeze on the worded questions. That's a translation problem, not a math problem, so we spend real time turning a paragraph into an equation.
I don't lecture. The student works problems while I watch, because I need to see where the thinking breaks rather than hear a summary of it. Marking schemes come out early so students know where the method marks sit, which matters when you can't finish a question.
Lesson length
One hour weekly. Two hours suits Higher Level sixth years, usually one session per paper.
