About Waldo

My passion for teaching languages started when I was in high school. I was only able to speak Afrikaans and English and it frustrated me as my context included a lot of different cultures and languages. I then started to learn French, but it was primarily grammar-focused. After two years of studying French I still was not able to speak it well enough to have a conversation. Then I went on a year-long volunteering outreach in a rural area in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa where the people only spoke isiZulu. Within 10 months I could speak in well enough to have a conversation! And I did not even study it! I was simply being immersed in the language without noticing. Then I started finding ways of doing the same but in a classroom set-up and that is where my journey started as an Afrikaans tutor. An advanced TEFL course from Global Language Training and two and a half years later, my passion in bigger than ever to empower people to be able to speak another language, but also to teach people ways to learn any language the want in the future!

About the lesson

My passion is to teach Afrikaans to people from any background, age or any level of previous exposure to Afrikaans. My teaching style is student-specific and relevant. This means I teach in a way that the student will be able to use Afrikaans in the everyday life and areas that are interesting to him or her.
A typical lesson will start off with learning vocabulary or simple sentences by looking at pictures or videos. Then describing what we see happening in the picture or video. Then we will focus on how we can use the vocabulary in your everyday life. I focus a lot on speaking and listening exercises which can be a lot of fun and are proven to be the fastest way to learn a new language, contrary to the typical grammatical approach that most schools use. Which we all know is not a very effective way to learn a new language!
