About Ben
I’m a PhD-qualified materials engineer from the University of Cambridge where I studied magnetic materials for use in electric aeroplanes. I have over 7 years’ experience in the working world, focusing on new-to-world technologies addressing the climate crisis. My favourite project was leading the build of Europe's largest liquid hydrogen demonstration to power a double-decker bus! I’ve taught many students at both school and university-level across various subjects. I've also led practical design courses, including engine design, wind turbine blade optimisation and the design and build of a racing car! Alongside tutoring, I am an avid rower, having rowed in the Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race. I have coached sports for over 15 years, specialising in rowing coaching. I am currently a co-founder of a technology startup building an app for rowing communities! I’m patient, approachable, and genuinely enjoy helping young people grasp new concepts, whether sporting or academic. My goal is to help you not just pass exams, but understand why things work and develop as a well-rounded person!

My teaching methods focus on understanding core principles of the subject over memorisation techniques. I like to use real-world examples from my career in research and engineering of new technologies. I teach by breaking down complex concepts into clear, manageable steps — encouraging students to ask questions, explore ideas, and build genuine confidence in problem-solving. I adapt my approach to each student: some benefit from visual explanations and interactive examples, others prefer structured notes and exam-style practice. Every session ends with a short recap and clear takeaways to wrap up!
