About Irene
About me! I taught high school English in New York City for more than 20 years. The classes I taught were from 9th to 12th gtade.
I taught lower level readers and honors students. I taught many novels but also plays including Shakespeare. In addition, I taught many poems and my students told me they liked my approach and learned to understand and like poetry.

Your assignment for your sophmore English class is to write an essay explaining who is the hero of the novel you just completed.
There are five main characters to choose from and you cannot decide who is really the hero. We might discuss what makes a person a hero. Another question might be " Who is your hero?"
From what this discussion produces, we would write a short essay about your choice and the reasons for your choice.
Another assignment might be about homophones: words which sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings.
We would discuss examples such as: there/they're/their, I/eye or tee/tea.
