About Kalin

About me: Hi, my name is Kalin! I'm 23 years old, and I'm from Lexington, KY. I've been an ESL tutor for almost 2 years! I just graduated with a bachelor's degree from Amherst College, the 8th best college in the country according to the Wall Street Journal. At Amherst, I double-majored in Psychology and Law! During college, I was commended for my writing and communication skills, which I have channeled into my passion for teaching English! I'm a very social person, so I constantly surround myself with friends and family. Other than teaching English, my main passions in life are travel, food, art, health, and nature! In my free time, I'm also starting my own small business, selling digital travel prints in an online shop. This helps me combine my love for art and travel into a remote business that connects me with travel-lovers from around the world!

About the lesson

I want to make learning English fun and easy for you! We can talk about your favorite topic--I'll provide the discussion questions, and we can chat like new friends. I'm not too focused on rigid lesson structures, so if our conversation leads us to a new topic, I'm happy to talk about whatever feels natural and comfortable for you. My goal is to help you speak more like a native speaker. I'll correct your grammar and syntax and suggest new vocabulary and English expressions for you to use. I offer 4 types of lessons. My experience & recommendations for taking my class: In my tutoring career, I've taught over 500 students and I've received hundreds of 5-star reviews highlighting my energetic and lively manner, my neutral accent, and my ability to make students feel at ease while learning. I have mostly taught adults--typically middle-aged professionals--but I can work with anyone. I've also taught a handful of children! I can tailor my lessons to your goals. If you'd like to speak more professionally in the workplace, we can do that. If you'd like to practice more casual English so you can talk with English-speaking friends, I'm happy to help you with that as well. My favorite topics to discuss with students are travel, food, health, and pop culture, but I'm open to discussing anything you'd like. I've taught lessons about everything from psychology and economics to Elon Musk and BLACKPINK. Before taking my class, I recommend having an English level of 5/10 or above. For people who speak Spanish as their first language, I can work with a lower English level, as I have B2 proficiency in Spanish. Lesson Types: Lessons can either be paraphrasing-focused, discussion-focused, conversation-based, or project-based. Paraphrasing: For paraphrasing-focused lessons, I will ask you a question and type your response, then immediately paraphrase it to make it sound more like a native speaker, while explaining my paraphrasing and answering your questions along the way. Discussion: For discussion-focused lessons, we'll have a conversation based on the discussion questions I provide while I transcribe parts of our conversation. Near the end of class, I'll paraphrase some of the sentences that I've written down during our conversation so you can get some feedback and see how you can improve. Conversation: If you're just looking for a conversation partner, I recommend a conversation-based lesson. For this type of lesson, we'll just have a discussion based on the discussion questions I provide, or whatever you'd like to talk about. Projects and Presentations: If you need help with something specific, like a presentation, job interview, or paper, I recommend a project-based lesson. For project-based lessons, I can help you edit emails, papers, cover letters, resumes, and more. I can also help you practice your interview or presentation skills, while providing you with my feedback and recommendations.
