About Chris

A maths lesson with me isn't just another school maths lesson.

Instead of memorising random formulae from a textbook and going through exercises, I'll build your understanding of each topic from the ground up, explaining why we study it, deriving each result and working through problems step-by-step.
That way, you see why each result is true and develop your intuition and reasoning so that you learn to think mathematically. In turn, this will enable you to approach even the toughest exam questions systematically and calmly work your way through them to solve them, rather than panicking because the question looks a bit different to previous ones you've done and you now don't know what to do.

Previous students have described me as patient, kind and calming, and you'll be treated in exactly the same way.
We'll go back to basics as far as we need to, and go through a topic as slowly as we need to, until it clicks, with no shame or judgement.

With my guidance and support, you'll hopefully see maths through a different perspective and feel like you truly understand it - because you actually do.

My credentials:

- First-class BSc degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Warwick
- A* in A-Level Maths; A in A-Level Further Maths
- 10 A* GCSEs including both Maths and Statistics
- 10 years' professional experience working as a statistician for a major UK company
- Experience explaining advanced maths and statistics topics to a general audience
- Enhanced DBS certificate and registered with the DBS Update Service

About the lesson

A typical session with me goes like this:

- I'll introduce a topic and explain why we're interested in it

- We'll derive the key results you'll need for your exams together, step-by-step

- We'll go through a couple of exam questions together - I'll show you how to approach and think about them systematically, and point out areas where marks can be easily lost

- I'll give you a couple of questions to try on your own

- We'll go through what you've done - if we find a mistake, we'll gently look at it to understand how it happened, and I'll explain how to approach it differently next time.

With this approach, understanding and 'exam technique' should develop naturally over time.

Your sessions will be tailored to align with the topics you're studying in school and to address any specific areas in which you need help.

I'll provide you with resource sheets at the end of the session covering the topics we've gone through. These will contain some practice exercises for you to try away from the session - it's important that you work hard at these, as the only way to get good at maths is to do it.

Your first free 30-minute session will be a consultation to allow us to get to know each other and allow you to explain where you're currently at with maths, what your goals are and what you need help with, so that I can then explain how I can help and create a plan for your sessions.

Details

Prices quoted above are for 1-1 sessions. Prices per student for group sessions are as follows:

- 2 students: £27 online / £31 in person
- 3 students: £24 online / £27 in person
- 4 students: £21 online / £23 in person
- 5 students: £18 online / £19 in person

An additional £5 charge applies for sessions held before 8am or on Saturdays.
An additional £10 charge applies for sessions held on Sundays or bank holidays.

An additional travel charge may be applied for in-person sessions held outside of Milton Keynes. I'll discuss this with you if applicable at the time of booking.

Sessions are available at the following times:
- Monday-Friday: 6am - 8pm (max. 6 sessions / day)
- Saturdays: 8am - 2pm (max. 3 sessions / day)
- Sundays and bank holidays: 10am - 1pm (max. 2 sessions / day)

All sessions last for 1 hour.
