About Isabelle

Hi I'm Isabelle - a passionate planetary science PhD student at Imperial College London studying and finding micrometeorites that fell on Earth millions of years ago.

I have completed Geology, Biology, and Maths at A level and achieved A*AA in 2017, and got a 1st class honours for my MSci in geology in 2021. I have been tutoring since 2018 with a diverse experience in teaching both classes and 1-1 lessons. I have also been a teaching assistant for multiple modules in university, assisting professors give practical lectures on subjects such as "Paleontology" and "Planetary Chemistry".

Additionally, I was employed by three educational companies by helping produce example primary school, GCSE, iGCSE, and BMAT questions, focusing on exam structure, techniques, and mark schemes.

I am always keen to learn new things, and I hope I can spread my enthusiasm towards education to my students too. If you are anxious or nervous I am always here to help because I have suffered the same feelings as well, especially towards exams. Because of this, I am a very understanding tutor, and will work at a speed that suits you best to achieve your desired goal. Thank you for considering me :)

The lesson plan varies depending on the student. The first meeting will discuss targets, previous grades, exam boards, strengths and weaknesses, etc., and we will go from there :) Maths lessons will start with a detailed walkthrough, outlining different methodologies with various examples and a chance for the student to show what they have learned by completing a diverse set of worksheets. Science classes consist of videos, presentations with comprehensive diagrams, and exam styled questions to focus on exam technique and mark schemes. The pace is always controlled by the student to reflect their needs, but optional homework is given when a topic is completed to secure the student's understanding. Please note I teach the following subjects: maths up to further maths GCSE, the sciences up to triple GCSE, biology up to A level, and geology up to undergraduate level.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My sixth form geology teacher suggested I act as a mentor for geology students a year below me. I had a mentor myself and I found it really helpful and learned I love to teach. I started professionally tutoring in undergrad and also worked for a few educational companies to gain valuable experience which developed my love of tutoring even more!
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I really love discussing scientific topics where we still don't have a clear answer - this helps students activate their "researcher" mode which can be really fun to see. As a planetary geologist, I have a special place in my heart for anything solar system related.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My university and old sixth form has some great teachers and lecturers. The first person I met in my life who had a PhD was my geology sixth form teacher. I often wonder what I'd be studying if he didn't make our geology classes as fun as they were.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Experience and love for the craft is a big need. Something often overlooked is patience. In a world where educational disabilities are becoming more recognised, we need to learn how to give every student an equal opportunity for success. Some of my favourite students to teach have been those diagnosed with dyslexia or ADHD and it was a joy to see them overcome their exam fears and develop a passion for the sciences.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I had a huge amount of anxiety in my late teens. It was scary to think about university and exams and I did not have support from home because I was the first generation in my family to stay in school past 14. I did not let any of it hold me back because I wanted to see how far I could go with the limited resources I had. Now I'm a tutor so I can help other students gain success without having to suffer through fear or lack of guidance.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I first found it difficult to adjust in university as someone from a poorer socioeconomic background, but having diverse friends from a variety of backgrounds is what makes my friendship group so fun to be around, and tutoring allowed me to earn extra money while doing something I love. My anxiety is also a challenge, but I try my best to never let it stop me. I've given talks at 3 international conferences and counting - that's something I never thought I'd be able to do!
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Definitely teaching and researching. I can't wait to become a lecturer at a university one day. Other than that, playing boardgames with my friends :D
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I've been tutoring since 2018 consistently, teaching ages from 4 to 40+, I give everyone the same amount of attention and enthusiasm, etc... You can read my "about you" section for a full list of my experiences or even ask for my CV! Our first session is a 15 minute get-to-know-me where you can ask for anything I might have forgot to mention :)
