About Calian Raine

I am a Queer, ambulatory wheelchair user with over 13 years of music education experience and a passion for accessibility and accommodation within all of education. I initially went to school to become a Music Therapist, and due to a lack of educational and musical accessibility was unable to finish my degree - thus prompting a path towards making sure every student had a way to engage with music fully.

I started my music education on Upright Classical Bass and within 6 months was the top Bassist for my age range two years in a row, I then added Cello, Violin, Viola, and Percussion to my practice rotation. I switched to Cello as my primary instrument after moving states and no longer having an Upright Bass available to rent. I have primarily done classical, pop, and show tunes in my professional playing - with small amounts of Jazz and Improvisation throughout.

When I was 13 I started a love for transcription, as a way to learn the patterns in the sheet music, to make reading it with my learning disabilities easier. I then went on to transcribe and arrange scores for several recording artists including Lindsey Stirling. My graduating year of high school, my orchestra had the opportunity to perform one of the pieces I had transcribed, arranged, and choreographed while I conducted.

I have over 15 years of working with children and did a season as the Musical Music Director for Bailey Middle School - focusing on teaching students to make cohesive, proud, and collective noise - while embracing the chaos that is 30+ middle school theater kids. Unfortunately, a spinal injury stopped me from being able to continue for a second year.

I love being able to find a process and a perfection within chaos - a skill learned through working my way up to being a Head Executive Sous Chef, Head of Food Allergy Accommodation, and Head of Guest Dining Experience under a Michelin Star Chef at a Private Guest Ranch. This love of method was fostered by growing up as a student with disabilities, having a sibling with disabilities, being a high performing student athlete, and growing up with music instructors who prioritized perfect and productive sound over joyous collaborative creation.

As an adult, I strive to make sure kids feel safe, comfortable, and confident when playing. Imbued with a desire to consistently learn, and make sure that playing stays an activity that is an outlet of creativity - not a cause of stress. Music is one of the few languages that everyone can engage with - and making sure that every student, no matter the age, financial ability, mobility, or education level can partake in is essential to me.

My lessons are specifically geared for beginners, to middle learners, focusing on technique and artful playing. I specialize in students with learning disabilities and who are coming to music as an extracurricular. My lessons typically involve warm ups, scales practice, score studies, and wind downs with home practice focusing on skills learned in class.
