About Dr Bogdan

--> Teaching experience I have been teaching (tutoring / demonstrating / supervising) Mathematics, Science, and Engineering topics at secondary- and university-level since 2013. Over 100 students advanced and consolidated their understanding over >1000h of teaching in total, many of them being successful professionals in their own right these days. --> Student-centric teaching style While I am very keen on scientific method and critical thinking, my teaching style is generally conversational. I focus on the students' needs, aiming to build their interest, knowledge, skills, and confidence at the same time. My broad expertise and experience facilitates using students' existing knowledge and interests (as diverse as Formula 1 racing or space exploration) as foundation on which further knowledge and understanding are built. --> Formal qualifications Two Master's degrees (2015 and 2016), a Cambridge PhD (2020), and a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2021). --> DBS checks Yes, clear DBS check certificate dated January 2024.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My passion for sciences started in primary school, thanks to discussions with my parents (both engineers), a very stimulating electronics after-school club, and a supportive school environment. Later in school, I started competing in Olympiads and supporting my peers by proposing questions in journals, and I started tutoring in my university years.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach sciences, mostly Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering, but I take a broad and multidisciplinary approach both in my own work and in discussions with my students. Without such an approach, these subjects can become tedious and appear artificial - when they are in fact amazingly interesting once one understands the context in which they were developed and in which are used.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was fortunate to have been trained by excellent teachers in school and afterwards in university. I remember admiring those who put time and passion into their classes and who took us (students) on a journey when talking about their subject. They will always remain in my mind and heart and I hope that I will also be able to guide and inspire my students.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Teaching, fun and rewarding as it may be, is quite difficult as it relies on mastering the subject matter, communicating efficiently, employing care, patience, and empathy, and being able and willing to learn and adapt continuously.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I appreciate thinking outside the box: during a Physics Olympiad practical test, I remember one of my peers using a bar of chocolate (provided as courtesy) as object of known weight, hence solving a problem which would have been much more problematic without considering this novel approach.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the main challenges is the segregated and not-synchronised style of teaching different subjects which normally rely on each other. This leads to sometimes Physics tutorials being repurposed for covering Mathematics aspects.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

One of my passions is maintaining diversity in my work, so I engage in multidisciplinary projects, I tutor different subjects and I work with students of different ages. This allows me to see multiple facets of reality and then share this knowledge with my students.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I don't know! But I suspect that my open conversational style, backed by years of experience. Plus the honesty to admit to myself and to my students that sometimes I don't know the answer - but am always determined to find it and to share the knowledge with others!
