I would normally start with a short survey to determine my students' needs and expectations. I would then create a lesson plan to adjust to my students’ interests. During the first meeting, I would conduct a pre-test too sometimes, to determine my students' current level and knowledge. I usually prepared weekly comprehensive learning materials as well, along with basic exercises, to improve students’ understanding. I would record students' attendance and write weekly activities summary as well. Finally, I usually collect students’ testimonials to improve my teaching techniques in the future. The duration of my lesson can range between 1-2 hours, but I would usually give students additional materials or homework as well. With a bachelor's degree in humanities from Indonesia's #1 top university, supported by IELTS certification, and DELF certification, I believe I am suited for students looking for an Indonesian tutor from beginner's level up to upper-intermediate's level, who can teach the lessons in English or in French.

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

For Indonesian, yes, I did grow up speaking Indonesian Language as it is my mother tongue. For English, I did grow up speaking English as well, even though it is not my mother tongue. I had the opportunity to attend private schools during my primary school years up to high school, which helped transform me into a bilingual speaker.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I have always loved history and literature. One of my favorite Indonesian authors is Taufiq Ismail. He is an Indonesian poet, activist, and editor of the Horison magazine. He contributed a lot to Indonesian literature, especially during the post-Sukarno period, and is considered one of the pioneers in Indonesia. One of my favorite English authors is Jane Austen. She was an English novelist known for her critique of 18th century English society, especially regarding women and marriages for social standing and economic security benefits.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

For Indonesian, what I love about Indonesian language is that Indonesians usually add "ya?" or "kan?" at the end of most sentences, which means "yeah?" or "right?" in English. Even though those words do not have any significant meanings grammatically, they add a sense of familiarity and fluency that can help learners sound more like native speakers or locals. For English, two of my favorite idioms are "No pain, no gain", which means you have to work hard for what you want, and "So far, so good", which means things are going well so far. What I love about these two idioms is that they are short and catchy, because they only consist of 4 one-syllable words. They only have one vowel sound with limited surrounding consonants shaping the whole part of the word. Hence, making them easier to pronounce.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking both Indonesian and English matters to me because people can communicate with each other through language, as well as build relationships and create a sense of community. I get to promote and exchange cultures as well with other people, which has always been my passion. Finally, researchers have also proved that Multilingualism can help prevent dementia later in life.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

For Indonesian, the main difficulties in learning the language are pronunciation, as well as affixes (prefixes) and suffixes. When non-Indonesian native speakers try to learn the language for the first time, it will be challenging for them to adapt to the phonetics and accents of local Indonesians. For English, the main difficulties that I have observed so far are in terms of writing, grammar, punctuation, vocabularies, and confidence. All of these difficulties can be tackled through both in-class practice and independent improvements outside of class.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

One valuable story that I can share about my language-learning journey is how I gained confidence during junior high school. I went to a private primary school where the subjects were still taught in Indonesian, but as soon as I entered junior high school, all the subjects were taught in English. Hence, I had to adapt to the new vocabularies, the way the teachers were delivering the materials, and the way some of my friends were bullying me for not being as fluent as they were. With continuous motivation and perseverance, I was able to improve and even took English literature as my IGCSE test. I got a "B" for my result, which is a tremendous blessing and precious experience that I will always treasure.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Traveling to and living in Australia right now has helped me enormously improve my English language knowledge, especially the different accents Australians have compared to Americans or British people. Communicating constantly with my family back in Indonesia also helped me maintain my fluency in my native language and stay true to my roots. I am truly grateful for everything.
