About Lina
I am a PhD-trained analytical chemist with a strong academic and professional background in chemistry, science and quantitative problem-solving. I completed my PhD in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Washington in the USA after studying Chemistry at Pepperdine University, and I also completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Teaching has been part of my academic journey for many years. I worked as a Chemistry Department tutor and laboratory teaching assistant during my undergraduate studies, and later taught chemistry classes and laboratory courses as a graduate teaching assistant during my PhD. I have worked with students at different levels and enjoy helping people become more confident with subjects that can initially feel difficult or intimidating.
Alongside tutoring, I work professionally in analytical chemistry and regularly explain complex scientific concepts to different audiences. I am also a published researcher and have served as a judge at the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair. My professional experience means I can show students how the chemistry they learn in class connects to real scientific applications.
I grew up in Lithuania, completed the IB programme, and later studied and worked in the United States before moving to the UK. Having experienced several different education systems myself, I understand that students learn in different ways and that academic expectations can vary considerably between programmes.
I am patient, approachable and organised, and I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and working through problems at their own pace. My goal is to help students build both stronger subject knowledge and confidence in their own ability.

My lessons are tailored to the individual student rather than following a one-size-fits-all format. I usually begin by identifying which topics feel least secure and what the student is working towards, whether that is improving general understanding, preparing for an exam, catching up on difficult material or working towards a particular grade.
I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind chemistry rather than simply memorising equations or model answers. I break difficult concepts into manageable steps, use worked examples and questions throughout the lesson, and encourage students to explain their thinking so that I can identify where misunderstandings are occurring. For exam preparation, I also use exam-style questions to develop problem-solving skills, accuracy and confidence under exam conditions.
A typical lesson is 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged for university-level topics, intensive revision or exam preparation. Lessons can also be adapted depending on the student's concentration, goals and level.
I hold a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Washington and have several years of university teaching experience. During my PhD, I taught chemistry in both classroom and laboratory settings. At Pepperdine University, I assisted with undergraduate chemistry laboratories for three years and also worked as a Chemistry Department tutor. I completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma myself, so I also understand the workload and expectations of the IB programme from a student's perspective.
I teach GCSE, A-Level and IB Chemistry, as well as undergraduate chemistry. At university level, I can provide more specialised support in areas including analytical chemistry, chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, quantitative analysis, data interpretation and scientific problem-solving.
My aim is for students to leave lessons not only knowing how to answer a particular question, but understanding the chemistry well enough to tackle unfamiliar problems independently.
