About Erich

I am a physiological ecologist, zoologist, and field biologist, and I specialize in hummingbirds. I recently completed my PHD in ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Toronto. My research mostly focuses on how hummingbirds use an ability called torpor (like an overnight hibernation) to save a bunch of energy, so that they can survive and thrive in a wide range of ecological conditions.

Biology has been my favorite subject since high school and I have always had a strong drive to experience and learn about nature. One of my favorite activities is to walk through nature, openly aware of what catches my eye, and to ponder what processes gave rise to that phenomenon. I am particularly excited about inspiring fascination with nature in my students by distilling intimidating details into easily understood stories, and by guiding their independent research projects.

Writing is another of my favorite things to teach. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies, I have mentored hundreds of students on various forms of writing and developed an absolutely love for writing myself. I teach that good writing is about finding the sweet spot where the big picture and specific points supporting that big picture are balanced and complementary. The most basic piece of advice I give my students (and myself) is to tell a story, and most of the time that quickly turns a would-be daunting assignment into a fun and fruitful exercise!

About the lesson

Over the years I have mentored and taught hundreds of highschool and undergrad students in all different subjects of biology, including ecology, animal physiology, animal behavior, field courses, evolution, cell, and microbiology. I also have extensive experience guiding students in independent research, biostatistics, and writing.

My teaching style is flexible and depends on what my student's strengths, weaknesses, and interests are. I strive to fascinate my students about nature by discussing stories about the life history of organisms and the environments they live in. I also use real world examples of how scientists study nature to help my students understand how our understanding of the world we live in is constantly expanding and evolving!

My overall goal of tutoring is to share what I have learned and excite students to learn about nature by teaching them what we KNOW about nature, actually HOW we know what we know, and what still remains a mystery.
