About Samuel

Due to my experience as a tutor across different levels and ages for nearly a decade, a student through my Bachelor’s in Microbiology and currently as PhD candidate, and actually applying the material and knowledge as a researcher both before and during graduate school, I have been able to curate a strong and effective approach to teaching and mentoring students. Beyond just meeting the desired goal (grade or performance in a course), I implement and develop learning strategies for students to build study habits, process new information, and reach a core understanding of the material, beyond simple memorization for the current course, which they can carry on throughout their academic careers and be true problem solvers and learners regardless of what subject or material they are being taught.

About the lesson

I’m a PhD candidate in cancer cell biology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, with a BS in Microbiology from Texas State University. I’ve been tutoring math and science since 2017, working with students from middle school through college level. I have experience and expertise in a wide range of subjects including:
Math: Algebra I & II, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus Science: Biology, Chemistry, and general Physics

College-level: Intro Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, General Chemistry, Biochemistry, General Physics, and any niche Biology courses

My approach: I focus on building real understanding, not just memorization, by breaking down the fundamental concept and logic underpinning the course material, not just how to get the answer. This fosters skills in problem solving and learning for future courses and the student’s academic career overall. As an active researcher, I bring real lab and data-analysis experience into science lessons, which helps students see how the material connects to actual scientific work. I’m patient, organized, and responsive, checking in and communicating on progress between sessions and adjust as needed based on what’s actually working.
Availability & format: Available for both online and in-person (Manhattan); my days and times are flexible given my graduate student/research schedule and I am happy to discuss a plan that fits yours!
