About Jarah
Hi there! I'm Jarah. I'm a PhD student in mathematical physics at Edinburgh University. My research lies at the intersection between pure maths and theoretical physics. I focus on concepts like representation theory, Lie theory and geometric quantisation. I grew up in South Africa, where I did my undergraduate degree in physics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, before moving to the UK to do my master's degree at Cambridge University. During my high school days in South Africa I won prizes in mathematics competitions and as a university student I worked as a tutor tutoring high school pupils in competition mathematics. As a PhD student here in Edinburgh I also do tutoring for the university. I'm extremely passionate not just about maths but about helping others discover its wonder and beauty!

Too many people believe that maths is about memorising formulae and getting the correct answer to questions in exams. I want to show you that maths is actually about the beauty of the relationships between shapes and numbers and is incredibly intuitive and fun if you can just get past the daunting terminology. If you're struggling with homework, a mathematical problem or a concept at any level, I want to help you understand it! I have experience tutoring at every level from primary school (ever wondered exactly why the area of a triangle is half base times height?) to master's level (but what actually is a differentiable manifold intuitively?). I charge £20 an hour for lessons and I have a pretty flexible weekly schedule. I can come to you anywhere in Edinburgh or we could just as easily work online!
