About Tim

Hi, I’m Tim! I hold a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Brigham Young University and a BS in Biochemistry from BYU-Idaho. My research focused on designing new tools for separating and detecting proteins, which led to publications in peer-reviewed journals like Lab on a Chip and Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, along with two pending patents.

Teaching has been a big part of my career the whole way through. I’ve been a TA for a wide range of chemistry courses, helped design classes, and mentored both undergraduate and graduate students in the lab. I’ve seen just about every way a student can get stuck on a chemistry concept, and I’ve learned how to meet them where they are.

You can count on me to show up on time, come prepared, and respond to messages quickly. I take your goals seriously, whether that’s passing a class, raising a grade, or building real confidence in chemistry.

When I’m not doing chemistry, you’ll find me rock climbing.

I’m a PhD chemist who loves helping students actually understand chemistry, not just memorize it. I recently finished my PhD in Analytical Chemistry at BYU, and along the way I worked as a TA for General Chemistry 1 and 2, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, Statistics, and Technical Writing in Chemistry, plus the lab sections for Gen Chem and Organic. I’ve also helped design courses, so I know how professors write exams, and my practice questions are built to look like what you’ll actually see on test day. Most of my best teaching moments came from sitting down with a student who was stuck and working through it together until it clicked.

My approach
Lessons are student led. You bring what you’re struggling with, whether it’s a homework set, a concept from lecture, or a topic you just can’t get your head around, and we work through it at your pace. I’d rather help you figure out how to solve a problem than solve it for you, because that’s what sticks on test day.

If you’d like a more structured lesson, send me the topic, your notes, or a practice exam ahead of time, and I’ll put together a lesson built around it.

A typical lesson

1. Check in on what you’re working on and where you’re stuck
2. Work through the concepts and problems together
3. Finish with exam-style practice questions to lock it in
