About Lida
Hi, I'm Lida! I hold a PhD in Chemistry and have spent the past decade working as a research scientist and technical leader in the battery materials industry, so chemistry isn't just something I studied, it's something I use every day.
I got into tutoring because I remember exactly how intimidating chemistry can feel when it's taught as a wall of formulas to memorize rather than a subject that actually makes sense once you see how the pieces fit together. My goal with every student is to make that click happen, so chemistry stops feeling like a subject to survive and starts feeling like one you can actually be good at.
I've mentored students and junior scientists at every stage of their careers, from undergraduates to PhD candidates, and I bring the same patience and clarity to tutoring: no judgment for not knowing something yet, just clear explanations and steady support until it makes sense. Whether you're working toward a strong AP or IB exam score, tackling your IB internal assessment, or getting through a demanding first-year university course, I'll meet you where you are and help you build real, lasting confidence in the subject, not just short-term answers.
I look forward to working with you!

My approach
I hold a PhD in Chemistry and have spent the past decade leading materials research programs in industry, working directly with the kind of chemistry concepts I teach — not just from a textbook, but from real lab and research experience. I believe chemistry clicks best when a student understands why something happens at the molecular level, not just how to plug numbers into a formula, so I focus on building genuine conceptual understanding first, then reinforcing it with practice problems.
Typical lesson
I start each session by identifying exactly where a student is stuck — a specific concept, a type of problem, or a gap from an earlier unit — rather than working through generic material. From there, I explain the concept clearly, work through a guided example together, then have the student try similar problems on their own while I'm there to catch misunderstandings in real time. Toward exam time, sessions shift toward past papers, timed practice, and targeted review of weak areas. For IB students, I can also help design and refine internal assessment lab investigations, drawing on my own research experience.
What sets me apart
Most chemistry tutors are current students or recent graduates. I bring genuine industry research experience — years of hands-on lab work and technical leadership — so I can connect what a student is learning to how chemistry is actually used, which tends to make the material more memorable and less abstract.
Who this is for
High school students in AP or IB Chemistry (SL and HL), and first-year university chemistry students (general and organic chemistry) at institutions like UBC or SFU. I'm especially well suited to students aiming for top exam scores, tackling IB internal assessments, or working to build a strong foundation before a demanding second-year course load.
