About Andy
I have received my Master’s degree in Composition at the University of Oxford and am currently a PhD candidate in Composition at the University of Bristol, specialising in writing for Western and non-Western musical traditions. My music has been performed in venues across the world, and I have experience writing for a variety of genres including film, theatre, dance and video games, so I can help you improve your skills regardless of the kind of music you want to write.
I have always found making music to be immensely exciting, and teaching others how to make music to be even more so. I have taught composition to students of all ages in both private and classroom settings, and I am committed to helping each and every student cultivate and refine their own way of expressing themselves through their music.

Our lessons will be designed around you - your skill level, your aspirations, your musical tastes and your learning style. We will look at how to start your composition, how to develop ideas, how to draw inspiration from different kinds of music and how to communicate what you want through your piece. I'll also introduce you to ways you can analyse and discuss not just your own music but that of others, which will significantly improve both how you write music and write about music.
We will typically meet remotely, giving ease of access in terms of both location and technology. Once we’ve established what it is that you want to achieve in our time together, I will guide you step-by-step through different musical challenges and exercises designed to achieve them. Over the course of an hour, I will take you through your compositions, using it as a base to work towards your creative goals, whether it’s exploring an unfamiliar sound, communicating a story, organising a score or achieving a specific effect. Regardless of how much or how little experience you have with composition, I will tailor our lessons specifically to equip you with the tools you need to make and articulate music your way.
These lessons are primarily for students up to A-level standard, but can be just as helpful for composers and songwriters who are interested in exploring something unfamiliar, such as non-Western traditional music.
