About Ali

Kia ora! I am Xiliaili, a PhD student in Economics at Victoria University of Wellington. I hold a Master's degree in Economic Statistics from China and have spent eight years working in higher education as a student advisor, where I supported hundreds of university students through their academic journeys.

I have always been passionate about making numbers and data make sense to people. Statistics can feel overwhelming at first, but I believe that with the right explanation and enough patience, anyone can understand it. My goal as a tutor is to turn confusion into confidence.

What makes me different from other tutors is my combination of advanced academic training and real experience working with students. I know what it is like to struggle with a difficult concept — I have been a student in three different education systems (China, and now New Zealand), studying in languages that were not my first language. This gives me empathy for students who find things challenging, and it motivates me to explain things in ways that truly connect.

I speak three languages — Uyghur (my native language), Mandarin Chinese, and English — which allows me to support students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. I am particularly happy to tutor in Mandarin for students who feel more comfortable learning in Chinese.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy research, reading, and spending time exploring Wellington with my family. I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your goals in statistics and mathematics.

I am a PhD student in Economics at Victoria University of Wellington with a Master's degree in Economic Statistics. I have eight years of experience supporting university students in their academic journey, and I bring patience, clarity, and a genuine commitment to helping every student succeed.

My tutoring sessions are typically 60 minutes, tailored to each student's needs and pace. I focus on building understanding rather than memorising formulas — I want my students to genuinely grasp the concepts so they can apply them confidently in assessments.

I tutor Statistics and Mathematics for NCEA Levels 1 to 3, covering topics including time series analysis, probability distributions, bivariate data, statistical inference, and algebra. I am also happy to help university-level students with introductory statistics and quantitative methods courses.

My approach is structured but flexible: I start by identifying where the student is struggling, then work through concepts using clear explanations, real-world examples, and plenty of practice problems. For NCEA students, I align my tutoring with the specific achievement standards so that everything we cover is directly relevant to their assessments.

I am based in Karori, Wellington, and available for in-person lessons in the Wellington area or online via Zoom. Lessons can be scheduled at times that suit the student, including evenings and weekends.

I also speak Mandarin fluently, so I am able to tutor in both English and Mandarin — helpful for students who may find it easier to understand certain concepts in their first language.
