About Emma

I am a passionate scientist with a love for everything weird and wonderful in biology. After discovering my for the subject during my undergraduate studies, I went on to complete a PhD in Genetics and Molecular Medicine.

I am committed to helping students achieve the grades they deserve by building real understanding and confidence, not just memorisation. I aim to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging with the material.

I also have experience supporting neurodiverse students and adapt my teaching approach to suit different learning styles, ensuring lessons are accessible, structured, and tailored to each individual.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring seeks to create an in-depth understanding of biology rather than just memorisation. As a PhD-trained biologist, I help students break down complex concepts into clear, manageable ideas, and guide them in developing the analytical thinking skills needed for exams and academic work. I am forever inspired by biology, and hope to pass on my love for the subjects to my students!

**Teaching methodology:**
The first step will be to define your goals as a student and then we will work together to create a personal work plan. For exam preparation, we focus on understanding key concepts, practising past questions, and developing clear, structured answers. For university students, I also support with scientific writing, data interpretation, and structuring essays or theses. I emphasise active learning, which means asking questions, working through problems together, and ensuring students can explain concepts in their own words.

**Lesson structure and duration:**
Lessons are typically 60 minutes, though longer sessions can be arranged if needed (e.g. for intensive revision or thesis support). A typical lesson includes reviewing key concepts, working through examples or questions, and identifying areas for improvement.

**Qualifications and experience:**
I hold a PhD in Biology and have experience in both research and academic writing, including preparing scientific publications and EU funding proposals. I am comfortable teaching across a wide range of topics in biology and environmental science, from foundational concepts to advanced material.

**Who my lessons are for:**
I teach students at multiple levels, including secondary school (e.g. GCSE, A-level, IB), undergraduate, and postgraduate. I particularly enjoy helping university students with more advanced topics, as well as supporting thesis and dissertation work.
