About Luke
I am a patient, passionate tutor with the burning desire to make maths clear, accessible, and interesting. I have a master's degree in maths from the University of Warwick, a PhD on tiling theory from the University of Glasgow, and a lifelong love of sharing my knowledge with others.
I have experience tutoring students at all levels from early secondary school to the final year of undergraduate courses at university. This experience includes private work as well as formal employment at both the Universities of Warwick and Glasgow as a mentor. I also tutored at the International Summer School at the University of Glasgow, providing a bridge between school and university mathematics. More recently, I have been teaching in secondary schools as part of my PGDE, working towards registration as a qualified teacher. I am also a registered volunteer with the UK Mathematics Trust, and have contributed at multiple events and summer schools, presenting talks which aim to bring mathematics to life.

When tutoring, I aim to teach much more than the rote procedures and rules required to perform maths at an operational level. Instead of simply scratching the surface, I foster a deep understanding of mathematics by exploring the rich connections between different topics, making sure to highlight a range of frameworks in which a given question might be considered. This approach leaves my students able to approach problems from multiple angles, equipped with the thinking skills necessary to allow them to excel in their future studies.
I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all structure when it comes to teaching, so I'm more than happy to modify the structure and delivery of my lessons to suit you. Depending on the context, I might prepare exam-style questions, enlightening examples, or a guided discussion to illuminate the key concepts of your course. I think it is vital to recognise mistakes as the valuable opportunities for learning that they are, welcoming them as a healthy part of the learning process. By listening closely to your answers and explanations, I will diagnose any possible misconceptions so that we can explore and correct these together.

Luke tutored my son through both GCSE's & 'A' Levels. I would highly recommend his communication skills and varied methods of teaching. He tailored his teaching to meet my son's needs. He was very patient and a great motivator! Luke's highly reliable and personable.
I have had the pleasure to be Luke's PGDE Maths tutor for a year, during his secondary Maths teacher training. I have been truly impressed by his knowledge of Mathematics and on its pedagogy. He is able to explain even complex topic in a very clear and simple way, starting from what the student knows and building from there. He has a very thorough knowledge of the Maths school curriculum, from primary to Adv Higher. He is well aware of common Maths misconceptions and of what pupils usually find difficult in learning Maths. He is also able to make Maths fun, interesting and enjoyable - he has a gift for this!
Luke is hard-working, professional, enthusiastic and friendly and he is able to make pupils feel at ease while learning.
I am confident he will be a fantastic tutor and I strongly recommend him to your agency and to all parents looking for a Maths tutor.View more recommendations
