About Lorenzo
My mission is to empower students to master all subjects (not just coding) through dynamic, bootcamp-style tutoring that rejects passive learning. I was inspired by my experience starting TRACE Camp, a coding bootcamp, during grad school which revealed the power of active, training-based learning, far surpassing the passive lectures I delivered as a college TA. Today at Valyria, my design studio, I teach students of all ages and empower their careers by connecting them with pro-bono nonprofit projects, building robust portfolios with real-world impact. My approach instills habits of getting 1% better every day, leveraging custom software—interactive coding exercises and personalized progress dashboards—to drive mastery and catalyze the Bloom 2-Sigma Effect, elevating students beyond 98% of peers.

Hello to future students: I'm Lorenzo!
I received a PhD in Human-Centered Computing from Clemson University, I am passionate about empowering students to master programming, data science, and more through a personalized, research-backed approach.
I'm uniquely inspired by the Bloom 2-Sigma Effect—showing one-on-one tutoring can outperform 98% of peers—so my method blends spaced-repetition tools and mastery-based learning to ensure deep understanding and retention. I enhance this with custom software, like interactive coding exercises and personalized progress dashboards, tailored to each student’s needs. Drawing from my Stanford Biomedical Data Science research and San Francisco consulting studio, I teach industry-relevant techniques, enabling students to apply Python, JavaScript, or biostatistics skills to real-world projects, from nonprofit web apps to genomics pipelines.
A typical lesson begins with a diagnostic assessment to pinpoint areas of weakness, such as specific programming concepts or data analysis skills. Based on this, I design a structured progression to master each subskill, using spaced-repetition prompts to reinforce prior knowledge and custom interactive exercises to build competence. Students then apply their learning to a practical problem, like a coding challenge or mini-project, ensuring skills compound for long-term retention and practical recall. I provide real-time feedback via personalized dashboards, tracking progress and adjusting the plan to ensure mastery. Each session ends with a tailored practice assignment to solidify gains.
What sets me apart is my unique integration of diagnostic-driven tutoring, custom software tools, and industry experience. My PhD research combined machine learning, biostatistics, and collective-intelligence theory, while my consulting studio trains developers on real nonprofit projects. Unlike standard tutors, I build dynamic, student-specific resources, honed through designing TRACE Camp’s full-stack curriculum for non-CS majors. This ensures students excel academically and thrive in practical applications.
