About James
My methods can best be summarized as STAR. I provide a Safe environment, one that allows for students to make mistakes. I Translate the material so that the student understands it in terms familiar to them. I help students develop Awareness so they can help themselves when I am not available, and I teach the students to Reflect on their work so that they better understand the material and can advocate for themselves. I developed this method working for years as an English professor and special education teacher for Nassau Community College and before that for a learning center and as a private tutor. I always approach the work as a colleague and peer, a fellow student who has a great deal of experience who values the input from others and promotes self-respect, agency, and advocacy in his students. When I am not teaching, I write fiction and have been published numerous times. Thanks for considering me as your tutor.

I teach through conversations and discussions often incorporating facts from academic subjects as well as pop culture references and anecdotes accumulated over 25 years as an educator, editor and student.
