PhD physicist who has worked at start up nuclear fusion companies with a love for engineering projects

Methodology

My teaching method is to teach the fundamentals from the ground up, so you can solve harder problems by piecing together easier ones as stepping stones. I never just give the answer to a problem and hope you gain the knowledge by osmosis or simply by seeing the solution, but give encouraging hints on the direction that you can take to be able to solve the problem yourself, which is always more rewarding.

Background

I am a physicist who has 5.5 years of schooling to get my PhD. During this time I had many undergraduate students in my lab that I would help with various projects and to teach the fundamentals of research in nuclear fusion. I also have 4 years of practical experience working

Experience
Oct 2016- Fusion Research Scientist
May 2020 Helion Energy- Seattle, WA
Responsible for the design and implementation of plasma diagnostics on the Venti FRC Plasma Generator. Some diagnostics include neutron detectors, electron temperature measurements, bolometers, and a multichannel bremsstrahlung emission array.

Sep 2011- Graduate Research Assistant
Oct 2016 NTF HEDP Group- Reno, NV
Responsible for the development of three independent d-d fusion neutron sources and their characterization. The first source was deuterated-palladium wires with an initial atomic concentration ratio of .7:1 D:Pd ratio. The second neutron source is a deuterium gas puff used as the load on Zebra. The third was the use of laser plumes as possible unique targets for Zebra.

Oct 2009- Student Worker III
Sep 2011 NTF Optical Diagnostics Group- Reno, NV
Responsible for post-campaign acquisition and processing of data from diagnostics such as bolometers and b-dots. Completed my senior thesis project developing a UV Faraday, shadowgraphy, and interferometry channels and system for investigation of the Z-pinch plasma.

Oct 2008- Student Worker I
Oct 2009 NTF Mechanical Engineering Group- Reno, NV
Responsible for the maintenance and repair of the high-energy density Z-pinch machine (Zebra) including machining replacement/additional parts, establishing and maintaining vacuum, and general turnaround of the machine after every shot. Additionally, responsible for machining parts and support of the projects for researchers at NTF; including instruments such as spectrometers.

Education
2011-2016 Doctor of Philosophy in Physics - The University of Nevada, Reno
Dissertation Topic: Neutron Production from Z-pinch Plasmas at the 1 MA Zebra Generator.
2006-2011 Bachelor of Science in Physics - The University of Nevada, Reno
Minor in Mathematics
Thesis Project: Developed a 266-nm UV Faraday rotation system to be fielded on plasma experiments at Z
