About Anier
I started my research work as an undergraduate student in the Physics Department at the University of Havana in theoretical fluid mechanics. I first tackled problems related to wave propagation in viscoelastic media at the onset of fluid instabilities in confined geometries. Afterward, my research in Havana focused on a closure problem in the context of viscoelastic turbulence using a phenomenological approach, namely, from Non-Extensive Statistical Mechanics principles, I proposed an integro-differential equation relating shear stresses to the statistical features of velocity gradients. From this equation, I could analytically describe a wide range of non-Newtonian rheological behaviors at a qualitative level from a unifying perspective.
I did my PhD (2013-2016) at the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI). There, I worked on a series of technical advancements in Lattice Boltzmann algorithms (LBMs) to study complex flows in irregular geometries, together with applications to the case of advection and diffusion of tracers in realistic porous media. The technical parts were mainly devoted to a detailed analysis of the effects of time discretization on the viscosity obtained using Lattice Boltzmann methods on unstructured grids. Through the Chapman-Enskog multi-scale expansion technique, I analytically derived the impact of time and space discretization on the transport coefficients in the resulting coarse-grained hydrodynamical equations. These numerical schemes allowed detailed studies of transport properties in realistic porous media. In particular, from such simulations, I computed the probability density function (PDF) of the Lagrangian velocities, and based on those results from the numerics, I gave a simple and general theoretical derivation of the link between pressure gradient and longitudinal and transverse dispersion. Applications of these Lattice Boltzmann methods were also extended to numerically explore the energy landscape of turbulent fluctuations and the formation of coherent structures in transitional flows over irregular walls.
My research work combined with teaching in related areas has given me teh skills to guide students through very hard topics. I encourage a critical thinking in the students so they become independent and fast learners
