About John
My biggest strength as a tutor is my ability to translate complex subjects into non-intimidating language and ideas for my students. My humanity precedes my training as a social scientist and this has always informed my approach to teaching. My motto is: "People first, then the material". I strive to help my students critically evaluate the topics they are presented with by helping them relate to the material using common, everyday terms. I've taught college classes on world affairs, globalization, comparative governments, political parties, as well as the American political system. I also spent five years teaching a course on the history of racial politics in the US at a large urban university, so I'm familiar with a diverse range of identities and perspectives.

My lessons are best suited for focused, motivated students from high school on through to university and grad school. I can help you with substantive questions you may have about the material you are encountering as well as quiz/test/exam prep and feedback on your writing/papers. While primarily a qualitative researcher, I am also familiar enough with statistical methods to know that in order to critically evaluate the world that we live in, students should have basic proficiency in interpreting the descriptive statistics they frequently encounter in today's data-driven environment. Translation: I can help you interpret those graphs, charts, and polls that make up so much of the picture we have of our current social/political/economic world. Please let me know what I can do to help you learn and succeed with your education!
