About Laura
I have a PhD in neuroscience from UCL (2016) and I have a first class undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences (Physiology with pharmacology) from University of Leicester. I won an award for 'Best Undergraduate during my undergraduate degree. Recently, I have been working as a post doctoral scientist at the worlds learning independent technology and product development company so my knowledge is current and I am aware of what is happening in the field of science.
I started tutoring university students during my PhD at UCL (2014-2016), assisting undergraduates with biochemistry and physiology based practical’s. This involved demonstrating how to set up the experiment, explaining scientific principles and the marking of their manuscripts. I also mentored a final year project student, helping with various laboratory skills such as cell culture and cell surface ELISA.
I then continued to tutor school children aged from 5-16 years, whilst I was writing up my PhD thesis and after completing it. I have now been tutoring for the last 3 years. Some of this tuition is in preparation for the child’s SATS/GCSE exams and other times I am there to recap the principles learnt during the previous academic year so that they understand the basics, before building on more complex techniques.

I offer online or home tuition in a one to one format or small group sessions. I try to help the children to understand the logic behind certain scientific principles or mathematical equations using interactive learning techniques such as drawing diagrams and using objects the child can relate too e.g. money or making our own shapes. We follow the syllabus objectives closely practising revision techniques such as writing out flash cards and also practise lots of past exam questions.
