About Sam
I'm Sam, a PhD researcher at the University of Bristol, where I combine machine learning with physics to study active matter systems. I came up through the Bristol school system myself, gaining A*s in Maths and Physics before a First-Class Honours degree, so I know exactly what these exams ask of you.
I've been tutoring since 2021 because I find it genuinely rewarding to watch a concept click into place for someone who thought they "weren't a maths person". Alongside my research I teach undergraduates at the university and volunteer as a Scout leader, so working patiently with people of all ages and confidence levels is second nature to me.
What I care most about is helping students feel capable rather than just memorising methods. Maths and physics stop being intimidating once you understand why things work, and that shift in confidence is the thing I most enjoy helping people find.

I'm a Bristol maths and physics PhD researcher (EPSRC-funded) with A*s in A-Level Maths and Physics, and I've tutored GCSE and A-Level students since 2021. I currently teach first-year maths at the University of Bristol, so I work with the exact material and exam boards your child is sitting.
My approach is to diagnose where things are actually going wrong rather than just re-teaching the syllabus. We build genuine understanding so problems become solvable from first principles, then drill exam technique with past papers so that confidence shows up on the day. I tailor every session to the individual student's weak spots.
Lessons run for one hour, in person around Bristol or online, and I'm happy to teach GCSE and A-Level Maths and Physics. Whether you're aiming to pass or pushing for top grades, I'd love to help.
