About George
I'm a PhD student in artificial intelligence at UCL. Specifically, I work on predicting the risk of heart attacks and strokes using smart watch data. I work with large datasets and do lots of programming.
Before this, I was a software engineer on a trading desk at an investment bank for 3 years, where I built trading systems using Java, Typescript/React, Python and some SQL. I ended up there as a follow on from my Master's in Theoretical Physics from the University of Manchester.
Despite it never being my main pursuit, I've always had a real passion for teaching - I find that the best way to truly understand things is to try to teach those ideas to someone else. It's highly rewarding and I get a real sense of joy in helping a student succeed. I had one particular student who hated physics and was on track to fail his GCSE, so I introduced him to some ideas that weren't on the syllabus. His eyes lit up and we left it at that. A few weeks later his teacher contacted me to inform me that he had done the entire year's worth of work in the week after that first session and was on track to becoming one of the best students in the class!

Typically I'd teach a student for 1-2 hours at a time, but I expect them to prepare questions/request topics they struggle with in advance so that I can best meet their needs.
I have a lot of experience communicating science - I ran an outreach organisation for 4 years in the North West where I designed and ran school workshops and public teaching events that reached 30,000 people in total! I've also tutored at all levels - students struggling to meet C grades (grade 4), all the way through to students trying to achieve A*s (grade 8-9). I'm a firm believer that students learn best when they can contextualise what they're learning, but I can also be pragmatic when required - sometimes a student just needs to pass an exam, right?
