About John
I earned my PhD in philosophy and have been a teacher of the discipline for several years. I am passionate about many areas of philosophy, but I believe the most important question we can ask is about living well and living better. This emphasis on morality and ethics, though, is broad and applies to a great variety of other kinds of questions we might ask.
My primary focus in my work is on the nature of duration (as compared to time). This means that I am interested in the philosophy of life. My other areas of interest include the history of philosophy, philosophy of economics, philosophy of race, and Eastern philosophy. I do not tend to teach in these areas, but we can have decent conversations about them if you are interested.
I can also teach LSAT prep.

Philosophy can often seem like a difficult subject to new students of the discipline. While it is true that philosophy can be very technical, anyone can understand philosophical problems at a basic level. From there, technicalities and the struggles to overcome such difficulties are met with enthusiasm and a desire to solve complex problems through the life of mind. Everyone need not be a philosopher, yet all humans philosophize. If you are interested in learning about ancient or modern philosophy, ethics, logic, metaphysics, philosophy of science, or process philosophy, I can help you. Alternatively, if you just want to talk about life and meaning, we can do that, too.
I'm not a teacher in the conventional sense. Though I have the credentials, I prefer to engage in philosophical conversation rather than provide long lectures. I prefer questions to answers (though giving answers a go is always valuable). That said, if you are in the mood for some historical knowledge about the ebbs and flows of Western thought, we can work through some of the great moments and developments of Western thinkers.
One of the most significant challenges in philosophy is to locate that part of experience that a given thinker is interested in and honing in on the perspective they come at that experience from. When you can coordinate your perspective with a philosopher's so that there is a shared passion, the work becomes easier. Learning to think with philosophers rather than thinking at them makes for much more rewarding experiences.
