About Phil
I studied philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, and later, as a postgraduate, at the University of St Andrews. I also studied Political Philosophy on my Politics and Sociology Master's degree course at Birkbeck, University of London. I have been teaching the subject ever since, to a wide range of students at different levels, while continually developing my knowledge and expertise. For me, philosophy has never lost its power to stimulate clear thinking about religious questions, moral dilemmas, political issues, the nature of perception, and many other philosophical issues.
I am committed to sharing both the skills I have developed and the insights I have absorbed. Exploring the great philosophers reveals how past and more recent thinkers have understood the world and how their ideas have evolved across the centuries - a journey I would be delighted to guide you through.

I am an experienced Philosophy lecturer with over 30 years of teaching expertise. My academic background includes an MA from the University of Edinburgh, an M.Phil from the University of St Andrews, an M.Sc from Birkbeck, London, and a PGCE teaching qualification from Brunel University. Alongside my work as a College tutor and Philosophy lecturer, I have developed a strong understanding of the needs and challenges faced by post‑16 students. As a SuperProf tutor, I specialise in supporting learners studying A‑level Philosophy, as well as related subjects such as Ethics in Religious Studies and Political Ideologies in Politics. I am also able to assist students undertaking more advanced courses within my areas of expertise. My particular interests lie in Ethics, Political Philosophy, Epistemology, and the Philosophy of Religion, though I am happy to provide guidance across other areas as required. Lessons are typically a minimum of one hour, with an initial free session offered to discuss your goals and learning needs.Teaching methods are tailored to each student, but generally combine:
Engaging discussion of key philosophical themes
Guided practice in articulating ideas clearly and effectively in writing.
Exam preparation, including close analysis and practice of past papers
As a committed advocate for independent learning, I will never produce coursework on a student’s behalf. Instead, my aim is to help learners build confidence, sharpen their critical thinking, and develop the skills needed to succeed both academically and beyond.
