About Clayton
I have a background in both fine art and documentary photography. I have worked at newspapers as a photographer and as photo editor, tackling projects ranging from wildfire coverage, Sundance red carpets, intimate stories about Alzheimer's care and much more. I received my MA in Photojournalism from Mizzou in 2024. My work has been recognized by College Photographer of the Year, the Missouri Press Association, Utah Society of Professional Journalists and other organizations. Currently I work as a freelance photojournalist, writer and educator based out of Kansas City, Missouri.

I've mentored student photographers in different roles and have worked with journalists working on projects that span months or longer. My approach is to meet each person where they are, cover the basics and then move into whatever format of photography they are seeking to learn the most from.
Lessons going over the basics are great for anyone who has had a camera sitting on a shelf for a few years and is hoping to start using it for hobby or to make some additional income. Learning your gear, lighting, and foundational knowledge will be the main goals.
For those more advanced seeking editing help, I am looking to be a soundboard for where to take whatever project you are working on. My time as a photo editor for a newspaper will help with narrowing down images, figuring out what images would be beneficial to look for and other issues that arise with these longer projects.
Additional skills we could work through include the business of photography, toning images, and file management.
