I like to let the students work out the problem on their own first to see their approach to problem-solving so I can see where their problem may lie. Then, help them to understand why their mistakes are mistakes and finally showing them an easier or more intuitive approach.
I am student, soon to be graduate, with grad school in my future. I was the physics club treasurer at my university and spent many hours in our club room helping underclassmen/women with assignments and understanding material in general. I have taken and succeeded in all upper level physics and math courses.
I will be receiving my B.S. in Physics in December 2020.
Our physics club at CCNY won "Outstanding Chapter" by APS
I worked 5+ years as a field technician for Clear Creek Systems Inc., a water treatment company specializing in groundwater.
Matthew was my classmate for several years. Whenever our study group had trouble understanding a lecture or solving a homework problem, he would offer his support, collaborate with us, and go out of his way to help the students who struggled the most. He tutored physics undergrads taking lower level classes, and participated in outreach programs for high school physics students. He actually enjoyed studying physics in his free time (which any physics major will tell you is not always the case), and would prepare interesting questions for every lecture. I really think you're going to enjoy having him as a teacher; More importantly, you'll learn to share his excitement for, and curiosity about, the many fields of physics you'll encounter throughout your career as a physics student.
Matthew is extremely patient and thorough especially with hard to understand concepts. His passion for physics and ability to problem solve make him a great teacher/tutor.
I am notoriously bad with numbers, spent most of my school years in remedial math, but Matthew helped me through a lot of it. Matthew is a calm and patient teacher, who will find ways to explain problems and equations so they make sense. Didn't understand the first way? He'll keep coming up with examples until it clicks for you. Whether it's the basics or more complex subjects, Matthew is a reliable tutor who genuinely wants others to learn.
