About Craig
I help GCSE and A-Level students make sense of physics and maths, one step at a time, and then turn that understanding into marks. What drives me as a tutor is seeing the moment a student shifts from confusion to confidence.
I completed my Master’s and a PhD in mechanical engineering, specialising in acoustics, at the University of Texas at Austin, where I first taught as a teaching assistant and private tutor. I then built a research career in Southampton across academia and industry, including co-supervising PhD students at the University of Southampton. In all, I have over 15 years of teaching experience, from GCSE students to postgraduate researchers, including work with The Access Project, an education charity.
Acoustics is physics you can hear. It gives me plenty of real examples to draw on, from waves and resonance to energy and the maths that describes them, and when an idea isn’t landing I can usually come at it from another direction.
I hold an enhanced DBS certificate on the Update Service, have completed the NSPCC Child Protection for Tutors course, and am an individual member of The Tutors’ Association.

I teach GCSE and A-Level Maths and Physics to the AQA and Edexcel specifications. I also work with Key Stage 3 students, and home-educating families.
Your first one-hour lesson is free. We use it to agree your goals and cover some real material, so you can judge whether my teaching suits you before you commit to anything. Parents are welcome to join for the first few minutes.
Lessons are one to one, either online on a shared whiteboard, where working is written out just as it would be on paper, or in person within 5 miles of Southampton city centre. Both cost the same.
You rate your confidence topic by topic, and past paper questions are tracked against the specification, so gaps show up well before the exam rather than after it.
At GCSE, lessons cover the method marks, required practicals, six mark questions and calculator technique that turn understanding into marks. At A-Level, they cover the step up in maths, the command words examiners use, and the treatment of uncertainty in practical work.
Whether the aim is to pass, to move from a 5 to a 7, or to secure an A*, sessions are built around your gaps and goals. I am as comfortable working through past papers as I am with derivations or conceptual problem solving.

I worked with Craig for 5 years, conducting research together and delivering science communication, education and public engagement activities together. We taught academics how best to talk about science and their research to the public, with a particular focus on school students.
Craig is incredibly knowledgeable, calm and caring and knows how to explain complex science at varying levels.I was Craig’s employer for many years at the University of Southampton, doing both educational and cutting-edge research activities.
He is a very appropriate person for tutoring for A-Level and GCSE Maths and Physics. He has a very solid foundational basis, and understands what the student needs.
We conducted educational outreach activities for people of all ages, from school children to pensioners, when he was in my employment and direct line management at the University of Southampton. He was always courteous, respectful, knowledgeable in his teaching, and a highly effective communicator.
He is extremely knowledgeable regarding the use of supporting technologies (electronic whiteboards, Teams whiteboard, virtual learning environments, etc.). Craig is an excellent problem-solver.
Dr. Craig and I attended graduate school together and co-tutored in physics and calculus. He is incredibly patient and has an excellent talent at identifying and correcting the core concepts students are misunderstanding. I highly recommend him to help with your studies!
