About Tianmin
I hold a PhD in Physics (Germany) and a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology (Australia), a combination that gives me both deep theoretical insight and a technologist's toolkit for modern teaching. With years of classroom and one-on-one tutoring experience across multiple educational systems, I have worked with students ranging from those rebuilding fundamental confidence to those aiming for perfect scores.

My teaching philosophy is built on three pillars: diagnosis, visualization, and connection.
Every student comes with their own strengths, gaps, and learning style. That is why I begin each tutoring relationship with a thorough diagnostic assessment -- not a generic test, but a conversation and problem-solving session that pinpoints exactly where the confusion lies. From there, I design a personalized roadmap that targets those specific areas while reinforcing what the student already does well.
One of my signature approaches is using interactive digital tools to transform abstract mathematical and physical concepts into vivid, manipulable visualizations. Instead of memorizing formulas, my students see how a function bends, feel how forces interact, and play with parameters until the underlying principles become second nature. This not only deepens comprehension but also makes learning genuinely engaging.
Beyond individual topics, I place heavy emphasis on building a connected knowledge network. Physics and mathematics are not isolated islands -- they are interwoven systems of ideas. I train my students to recognize patterns, draw analogies, and apply first principles across seemingly different problems. When a student can genuinely explain why a formula works and how it relates to three other concepts they have learned, that is when true mastery -- and top exam results -- follow naturally. This "connect-the-dots" approach is also the secret to excelling in competitive settings, where unfamiliar problems demand flexible thinking rather than rote recall.
Lesson Structure
- Standard lessons run for one hour, which I have found to be the optimal duration for sustained focus and meaningful progress. However, I am happy to adjust length upon mutual agreement -- some students prefer 90-minute deep dives, while younger learners may benefit from shorter sessions.
- Each session typically includes a warm-up review, targeted instruction on new material using visual demonstrations, guided practice with immediate feedback, and a summary with tailored exercises for the week ahead.
Who These Lessons Are For
- VCE students (Years 11-12) preparing for Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics, and Physics, whether aiming for a study score of 40+ or simply seeking to secure a solid passing grade.
- Competition participants tackling Olympiad-style problems, Australian Science Olympiads, or other advanced challenges.
- Secondary school students (Years 9-10) who want to build a strong foundation early or accelerate ahead of their cohort.
- Lessons are conducted either in person in the Geelong area or online via interactive screen-sharing, so you can learn from anywhere with the same immersive experience.
Whether you are aiming for a top ATAR, a medal at competition, or simply a genuine "aha!" moment that transforms how you see the world through math and physics, I am here to guide you every step of the way.
