About Lauren

My undergraduate science education degree included a full year of algebra-based and introductory calculus-based physics at the University of Denver, covering mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics. I have been tutoring physics for 4 years to students ranging from middle school physical science through AP Physics 1 and 2. I am especially good at working with students who feel convinced they are "bad at science" — because my concept-first, patient approach almost always helps these students break through that wall and start making real progress. In 2023, I tutored a 10th-grade student who had failed his first physics unit — by the end of the semester he was passing every test and told me physics had become his favorite class. I also helped a college freshman at the University of Denver pass her introductory physics course after struggling through the first half of the semester. I bring genuine enthusiasm to every topic — especially astrophysics and quantum physics, where the material is so fascinating that students often forget they are studying and just start wanting to know more. That is exactly the kind of session I love most.

Here is the thing about physics that most students do not realize until someone shows them: it is not actually about memorizing formulas. It is about understanding how things work — and once you have that understanding, the formulas take care of themselves. That is the shift I work to create in every student I teach. My physics lessons always start with the concept — what is actually happening here, in plain English — before we ever touch the math. I want you to be able to picture what is going on: the ball flying through the air, the gas molecules bouncing around, the electrical charges pushing and pulling. Once that mental model is solid, applying the equations becomes logical rather than guesswork. For foundational physics I cover kinematics — position, speed, velocity, acceleration — using clear diagrams and worked examples. We move through Newton's three laws, forces and free body diagrams, work and energy, momentum and collisions, circular motion, and simple harmonic motion. Then waves and sound, light and optics, and electricity and magnetism round out the classical physics curriculum. I align all lessons with your class or AP Physics 1 and 2 standards. Thermodynamics is one of my favorite areas to teach — connecting heat transfer, entropy, and the laws of thermodynamics to everyday examples like refrigerators, car engines, and why your coffee goes cold makes abstract laws feel completely logical. For astrophysics I love exploring the life cycle of stars, black holes, the expanding universe, dark matter, and gravitational waves — these sessions always turn into the most exciting conversations. Nuclear physics covers radioactive decay, half-life, fission, fusion, and reactor basics in a clear and age-appropriate way. And for quantum physics, I walk through wave-particle duality, the uncertainty principle, atomic orbitals, and quantum weirdness in plain language that respects the real science without making it needlessly confusing. Every session includes worked examples, practice problems, and plenty of check-ins to make sure you are actually following — not just nodding along. Physics is one of the most beautiful things you can learn in school, and I am genuinely excited to share it with you.
