About Nicholas

My name is Nicholas Whiteaker and I have been speaking Spanish since I was 14. I realize with most students that speaking a foreign language is not always seen as a priority within school life due to the dominance of English within the United States. I especially experienced this while tutoring my own younger brothers on the language. However, I do want to say that even being able to speak the language on a conversational level, has opened professional and academic opportunities for me. These same benefits of speaking a second language will pay off at some point in your life, but only if you put in the work now. Learning languages becomes increasingly harder as you get older, and Spanish serves as an excellent foundational language for English speakers to understand. Learning Spanish makes it easier to understand most other Latin-based languages such as French, Italian, and Portuguese. Overall, with Spanish being such an excellent beginner language and one of the most widely spoken languages across the world, I can guarantee you learning the language is a great skill to have.

About the lesson

I use a communicative approach, focusing on real-world conversations, cultural context, and interactive learning. My lessons incorporate a mix of structured grammar, vocabulary building, and practical speaking exercises to ensure well-rounded proficiency. I emphasize active participation through role-playing, storytelling, and multimedia resources to make learning both effective and enjoyable. I particularly like to emphasize review as it's important to me that those I tutor on this subject fully comprehend how to apply concepts as a native speaker would be able to.

A Typical Lesson Plan:
Warm-Up & Review (10-15 min) – Brief conversation in Spanish, reviewing past material.
New Concept Introduction (5-10 min) – Explanation of grammar, vocabulary, or cultural insights with examples.
Practice & Application (20-25 min) – Speaking, listening, reading, or writing exercises based on the topic.
Wrap-Up & Feedback (5 min) – Key takeaways, corrections, and homework suggestions for reinforcement.

My lessons are designed for those beginning the language at the high school level. I would be capable of explaining and discussing more intermediate concepts at the more advanced levels such as: the usage of the imperfect versus preterite, relative superlatives, and how imperative verbs interact with object and reflexive pronouns. However, these lessons would not typically be brought up in most class rooms, unless they were operating at an advanced level.
