About Tom

I'm Tom, a second-year Undergraduate student at the University of Manchester. I have studied History throughout my entire education, running a Humanities club in Secondary School and participating in the History Society at Manchester. Along with my passion for history, I love sports. I enjoy swimming and playing football, although my main sport is rugby. As a result of these interests, I find huge enjoyment in making both sports and history engaging and accessible for students. I have worked for a range of companies that are dedicated to this pursuit, such as: Teaching football, rugby and tennis at a summer camp for school students, Mentoring school students in debate skills to improve their articulation and confidence, Tutoring for several years to a huge range of ages, across a range of subjects. Through this experience, I have worked with students who were complete beginners to those who were highly adept. Regardless of their skill level, I have found that the most important aspect of teaching is to make it enjoyable, to learn we must want to, and to want to we must enjoy. To make learning enjoyable, I believe teachers must be attuned to their students' nuances; every student is different, and they learn and understand differently. As a result, I adapt my teaching methodology according to the students' needs.

About the lesson

Through studying History for nearly a decade, I have covered a huge range of topics and periods. Before tutoring any specific topic, I break it down and master it piece by piece, both in its content and the way in which it's examined. Students often lack the last per cent of detail required to achieve top marks and may just need to add to their current understanding. Furthermore, I believe that where many history students fall short is not primarily in their understanding of the content but rather their inability to effectively utilise it. Through understanding how both the exam and the examiner work, I aim to push students to the top level and achieve the top band of marks. I teach GCSE History, and have tutored for several years, along with teaching debate skills to school students and working at a summer sports camp for school children.
