About Alex
I'm a recent graduate with a First Class degree in BA History from UCL and a Master's degree in Politics from the University of Cambridge. I'm really interested in modern history, but have also studied other time periods as well. I have an A* grade in Government and Politics and have completed an MPhil in Politics and International Studies this year. I went to sixth form in London, but grew up in China. At university I wrote for several student publications and was also part of the dodgeball team. I want to help my students improve by finding out what really interests them and helping them to find that in their subject and studies. I will structure the lessons around engaging quizzes and activities that keep the students focused and, hopefully, excited as well. Everyone has a different method of learning so it's important to find out what works best for each student. I found that the easiest way for me to memorise something was when I was interested in it, so my priority is getting my students excited and interested in their topics.

The online lessons need to be a balance between hands-on feedback and criticism of their work, so that they know which areas to improve on and how to improve their grades. But, just as important, the lessons need to focus on what the student's strengths are and how these strengths can be focused on the subject itself. For example, if the student is a visual learner, pictures and videos can be a really good way of memorisation and of improving understanding. If the student is an aural learner then creating songs or mnemonic phrases can also be a good way of learning important facts and topics. I will help students achieve their goals by showing them how they can apply their skills and talents to their studies. Progress can be measured quantitatively, in terms of grades and marks, but progress is also about becoming interested in the topics you're studying and demonstrating passion and excitement for learning.

Alex is a very thoughtful and thorough tutor. He provides excellent tailored help to the individual with the areas that they struggle with. I struggled with structuring essays and I found his step by step help incredibly useful, and he provided me with an excellent starting point on all future essays.
Furthermore, he had a very in-depth knowledge of politics and history. I have found that many other teachers tend to focus on a very specific point of history or politics, which leads to a very poor understanding of how events transpired and the motivations for significant historical players. Due to Alex high understanding of history and politics this has never occurred, and instead he paints a very detailed picture of how events transpired.
As a result in essays I have been able to include much higher level of analysis as Alex encouraged 360 thinking, which leads to higher marks in exams.I've known Alex for over 10 years and have seen him tutor lots of students in History and Politics at both GCSE and A-level. He is always very dedicated and cares a lot about his students. He has helped his students to improve their grades, develop their essay writing skills, and get the best exam scores. He is very passionate about his subjects and tailors his lessons to suit his students' needs.
Alex was always a very self-disciplined and organised student and he has carried these qualities over into his tutoring. He prepares fully for each class and tailors lessons to each student's needs and abilities. He is patient and excellent at explaining issues. His enthusiasm for his subject comes over clearly and his relaxed and non-judgemental style puts students at ease and helps build their confidence. He also sets attainable goals and follows up with homework assignments and practice tests so his students are fully prepared for any future exams. I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Alex as a tutor.
I have have had many discussions about history, politics and economics with Alex over the years and he always shows an excellent understanding of the many ways in which an awareness of history helps us negotiate the complexities of modern life. He is also diligent and conscientious as a teacher, sensitive to individual learning needs, and in tune with the requirements of different kinds of academic exams.
