About Sophie

I am an experienced academic tutor with a PhD in Politics and a Master’s degree in Social Research. I previously lectured at the University of York, where I taught undergraduate and postgraduate students across politics, public policy, and research methods. I have several published articles and was awarded Dissertation Supervisor of the Year while teaching. My main specialism is dissertation and research project supervision. My PhD thesis won a national academic award, and I'm keen to share my knowledge and experience with students who are currently struggling with their research.

I'm a kind, friendly, and approachable tutor who cares deeply for students' well-being. I have experience providing academic support to national and international students who feel overwhelmed in their degree programmes.

About the lesson

I work closely with students looking to improve their dissertations and essay writing. In my lessons, students will learn how to develop strong research questions, clear arguments, and high-quality writing.

I can provide excellent support to social science students feeling stuck on their Bachelor's and Master's dissertations. Including support with proposal design, literature reviews, methodology, data analysis (qualitative and quantitative), and polishing final drafts to a high academic standard. I can also give extremely detailed written and oral feedback on dissertation drafts.

Our sessions are tailored towards you, your project, and where you are in the dissertation process. A typical session might include:
- Refining your research question and overall argument
- Structuring chapters so they meet examiner expectations
- Strengthening academic writing
- Improving literature reviews and theoretical framing
- Designing or troubleshooting methodology (qualitative or quantitative)
- Interpreting feedback from supervisors

I offer in-person lessons in York and remote sessions for students elsewhere. Sessions are tailored to your course requirements and marking criteria, whether you need long-term dissertation supervision or targeted help with a specific problem.

I also teach politics, public policy, and social research at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, and I’m particularly well-suited to students who want to move from “doing okay” to producing genuinely excellent work. If you’re looking for rigorous, practical academic support from someone who understands both research and assessment from the inside, I’d be happy to help.
