About Fernan
Hello. I'm Fernan. I'm a creative professional with 20+ years of experience. I graduated from CalArts (California Institute of the Arts) with a character animation major, and have worked professionally as a background artist and animator in the industry and held various leadership positions as a lead designer and Head of Design. My interest is in animation specifically in background design and illustration. I enjoy oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting, as well as life and still life drawing in charcoal, pencil, and pastels. I enjoy helping my students to see light and shadow, color and contrast, and form and using those tools to tell a story.

The creative landscape is changing. Driven by evolving technology and better tools, it's becoming harder to find work as a professional and/or stand.out as an aspiring student.
What sets artists apart is the strength of their ideas and storytelling.
And understanding the basics of form, light and shadow, composition, contrast and color, are paramount to creating work that is fundamentally sound with a strong foundation. In this class, I will help to strengthen your foundation through consistent practice and observation, master studies, and ultimately apply everything to tell stories in multiple capstone projects.
While this class is for serious art students preparing portfolio for art school admission or upcoming professionals aspiring to work in the creative industry, I have taught kids from 5 years of age to High School. We can work on building foundation as well as applying it for professional work.
