About Artemijs
I am Artemijs and I have recently graduated with the Master of Chemistry degree from the University of Durham, where I am currently doing a PhD in Chemistry. I have always been passionate about natural sciences which lead me to tutoring Chemistry, Biology and Physics.
My tutoring experience began in 2019 with joining the SCA One-on-One Tutoring project, a voluntary service run by Durham University students for pupils of a secondary school age who needed help with their GCSE and A-Level studies. The sessions focused on helping the students learn the topics that they found the most challenging.
In 2020, I joined a popular online tutoring platform, where I have regular A-Level (AQA) and GCSE (AQA and Edexcel) Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. This year, I started tutoring school pupils GCSE and A-Levels Science through an approved integrated online programme. Apart from that, I work as an A-Level Chemistry tutor for the Durham University Levelling Up: Aspire Higher programme: I provide academic and pastoral support to prospective chemistry students, covering the topics useful for their transition to undergraduate studies.
All experiences helped me identify what science areas students commonly find the most challenging and learn to effectively optimise my teaching style to match the needs of individual students. I learned to quickly find the best approach to new students while keeping the current students interested. To my tutees, I am someone who is there to help them get better at their studies without feeling uncomfortable when they don't understand something or give a wrong answer. My approach helps my students stay engaged throughout the lesson and look forward to the next session every time.

I believe that the key to a successful tutorial is efficient communication and personalised learning. I try to make my lessons interactive with the help of technology and by constantly challenging my tutees to achieve a higher level of understanding. Instead of expecting my students to memorise certain concepts, I explain them in detail, make examples and find a link between the new and previously covered ideas, which, I believe, greatly improves the problem-solving skills.
When I start tutoring a new student, the first objective is to determine the student's knowledge of the material and overall understanding of general concepts and ideas within the subject of study. I aim for a relaxed chat about what they have learned and what they find the most challenging and then ask them questions about the subject, starting from the basic ideas and then extending to more advanced related concepts.
My students are free to decide what they want to do during a lesson. Sometimes we recap particular topics; at other times, we can dedicate the whole session to doing past papers; or we can have an in-depth discussion of what they just covered at school that day and didn't quite understand. In other words, the format of the tutorials can be flexible and adjusted to the needs of each student.
Although a good understanding of the main concepts is crucial in science, it is not always enough to do well in the exams. I always keep myself updated with the current curriculum to ensure that my students cover everything (and maybe a bit more than) required. I aim for a perfect balance between covering all bits of a topic, including terminology, definitions, descriptions, and teaching why certain things work in the way they do, which is not usually required by the curriculum and so not taught at schools. Even though it might take more time to grasp, I believe that this extra knowledge is more helpful during an exam than just relying on memorising things without really understanding them. There is a lot of material to remember, while not that much to understand, because in science, often, individual cases are commonly governed by some basic principles and rules.
