About Mary

I am a University of Queensland graduate and a bilingual Mandarin tutor with 3 years of teaching experience. I specialise in absolute beginners and children. Students describe my classes as practical, calm and friendly, with clear steps that make progress visible from the very first lesson.

What makes my teaching different is the insider culture I bring into class—the way people actually speak in daily life. Alongside textbook clarity, I share natural small-talk, everyday slang and etiquette (for example: how locals really say “to-go/打包,” when “shifu/师傅” is polite, what to say in elevators, how to behave in group chats, festival greetings and red-packet manners). These small details help you sound authentic, not textbook-ish.

I value structure and kindness. You will always know the aim of each lesson and what to practise between sessions. I respond within 24 hours, provide tidy materials, and celebrate small wins so that confidence grows steadily. If you need HSK, I also run a structured, exam-oriented track with diagnostics, drills and mini reports.

Standard session length: two hours. Shorter lessons can be arranged on request.

About the lesson

Teaching focus & promise:

Practical first. Every session targets one small, useful outcome (greeting a neighbour, ordering food, booking, school life, short introductions).

Custom for your goal. Whatever your goal—hobby, work or travel—I design a personalised plan and update it as you progress.

Speak like a local. Each lesson includes a tiny culture & slang nugget so your Mandarin sounds natural and polite in real contexts.

Beginner & kids-friendly. I use phrase blocks + tone hacks for adults; games and stories for children to keep focus and joy.

HSK preparation available (levels 1–6). Textbook-based pathway with diagnostics, section drills (Listening/Reading/Writing/Speaking), timed mocks and mini reports.

How a typical two-hour lesson works:

Warm-up & quick review – short success check and confidence boost

New language + culture nugget – clear examples, visuals and usage notes

Guided practice – controlled speaking/writing with immediate feedback

Short break

Real-life task or role-play – apply to a practical scenario (order, ask, introduce, message)

Consolidation – pronunciation tune-up and phrase-block fluency

Feedback & take-home – you leave with a mini checklist and voice-note homework

Tracks you can choose (mix & match):

Hobby track: pop-culture stories, drama lines, meme decoding, friendly conversation flow.

Work track: meetings, email-to-chat switch, coffee-chat scripts, cross-cultural do’s & don’ts.

Travel track: transport, food, directions, asking for help, quick phrases that work.

HSK track: diagnostic in the trial → one-page study plan with weekly targets; vocabulary/grammar sheets; section drills; timed mock tests with score tracking and targeted review.
