About Christopher
For the first four years of my professional career, my primary focus was passing exams (fifteen in total) to qualify as an actuary. These professional exams required a level of time, discipline, and depth of understanding comparable to a PhD, all while working full time. Very quickly, I had to learn how to study efficiently, prioritise what really mattered, and make the best possible use of limited time.
During my route to qualifying I was awarded the prize for the highest mark in the actuarial qualifying exam, reflecting both deep subject understanding and strong exam technique.
I am now an examiner for one of these professional exams, which means I have a clear understanding of what examiners are looking for and which techniques genuinely make a difference to results.
My academic background is in chemistry, where I achieved a first-class Master's degree. Moving into finance, mathematics, and statistics required me to go back to first principles and teach myself how to understand fundamental concepts in ways that made sense to me. That experience strongly shapes how I teach today.
I look forward to passing these skills and approaches on to you!

My approach to teaching is built on a simple principle - understand the subject matter clearly first and then learn how to show that understanding to examiners.
I’ve seen learning from every angle. As a school and university student, a professional, and someone who marks exams. That means I don’t just teach what to learn, but also how to show that understanding under exam conditions.
1. Making complex ideas easy to understand:
As a practising actuary, a core part of my job is taking highly technical, complex ideas and explaining them clearly to people without a technical background, including senior decision-makers. That same skill sits at the heart of my teaching.
Many students struggle not because the subject is “too hard”, but because it’s explained in an overly complicated way. I break topics down into clear, logical steps, using plain language, visual explanations, and real examples.
My goal is always that you can explain the idea back in your own words — that’s when real understanding starts.
2. Building confidence through structure:
Once the core concepts are clear, we practise applying them in a structured way. I show you:
• how to approach unfamiliar questions calmly;
• how to spot what a question is really asking; and
• how to avoid common mistakes that lose easy marks.
This is especially important for exams, where technique matters just as much as knowledge.
3. Learning how to impress examiners:
As an examiner myself, I teach students how to write answers that score marks. We focus on:
• clear working and logical presentation;
• using correct terminology without overcomplicating; and
• showing enough method to gain full credit.
This is often the difference between “knowing the topic” and achieving top grades.
4. Supportive, patient, and results-focused:
I adapt my teaching to each student’s level and learning style, whether you’re building foundations, catching up, or aiming for top grades. Lessons are focused, encouraging, and designed to help you make steady, measurable progress.
If you’re looking for a tutor who can explain things simply and help you succeed in exams, I’d be very happy to help.
