About Bonnie
Bonnie Kelso is the author and/or illustrator of many books for children. With a background as an exhibit designer for organizations such as Smithsonian Institution, National Geographic, and NASA, Bonnie enjoys taking complex information and distilling it into bite-sized pieces. Her passion for nature and environmental awareness shines through in her books, murals, and community art workshops. She is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and winner of the 2021 SCBWI Karen Cushman Award. Her picture book, Nudi Gill, was selected to represent Nevada at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC. Her book, Dexter The Stand Up Dog, was awarded a Eureka Silver Medal for nonfiction. Presently, she is the Regional Advisor for the Nevada chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She also works part-time for a small publisher as a book designer and marketing specialist.
Over her twenty-plus years living in Las Vegas, Nevada, Bonnie has designed and painted many public murals, hosted creative workshops for children and adults, and has collaborated with organizations such as Nevada Arts Council, City of Las Vegas, Clark County Libraries, Henderson Libraries, Discovery Children's Museum, Las Vegas Science and Natural History Museum, and Clark County Schools.

Have you always dreamed of creating books and illustrations for a career, but you're not sure how to get started? I will help you create a body of work that represents you with authenticity—something that industry professionals and art and design schools crave to see. You have a creative voice that begs to be nurtured. I can help you see the big picture and pinpoint your goals. Together we will design a body of work that cohesively represents your signature style and creative voice.
These mentoring sessions are perfect for the self-starting creative who wants to develop a portfolio focused on children's book illustration.
I can teach (traditional and digital) drawing, painting, and collage techniques that are commonly used in book illustration. Students are expected to complete assignments on their own and share them with me for critiques and constructive feedback.
I have over thirty years' experience in art and design fields, from fine art and illustration to logo and book design. I have been teaching workshops for the past fifteen years for children and adults. My teaching style is collaborative, and I love customizing projects to fit a student's unique goals, curiosity, and drive.
