I believe that intuition is the first step. Don't get all fancy and technical with your maths until you have a moderate or deep intuition on what things truly mean. I will exercise this rigorously, and then steer them in the right direction to REALLY understand the content. I will do whatever it takes, even if that means going over time without extra pay, for my students to acquire a rich and sophisticated understanding.
